Jim McLaughlin was one of the towering figures in Dundalk history, both as a player and, above all, as a manager. He joined as player-manager in 1974 and led the club through one of its greatest eras, winning three League of Ireland titles, three FAI Cups and two League Cups. His 1978–79 side completed a famous league-and-cup double, while his teams also made major strides in Europe, reaching the last 16 of the European Cup in 1979–80 and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1981–82. In simple terms, McLaughlin helped turn Dundalk into a genuine force at home and abroad.
