Drogheda United’s 2005 FAI Cup win was a landmark moment in the club’s history. They beat Cork City 2–0 in the final at Lansdowne Road on 4 December 2005, with goals from Gavin Whelan and Declan O’Brien. Drogheda went into the match as underdogs against a Cork side chasing a double, but produced a composed performance to claim the club’s first major senior trophy. The occasion was huge too, drawing a crowd of 24,521, the biggest for an FAI Cup final since 1990. In simple terms, 2005 was Drogheda’s breakthrough day — the moment they finally turned progress into silverware.
