Jim McLaughlin was the manager behind Derry City’s greatest ever season. A Derry man himself, he took charge in 1986 and built the side that won the famous domestic treble in 1988–89: the League of Ireland title, the League Cup, and the FAI Cup. That achievement was historic, with Derry City and Derry City & Strabane District Council both later highlighting him as the man who led the club to that landmark sweep. He stayed in charge until 1991, and his Derry spell is remembered for discipline, standards and turning the Candystripes into champions at national level.
