James McClean is one of Derry City’s most famous modern exports. A Derry native, he broke into the first team in 2008 and quickly became a key wide player, scoring on his debut and helping the club through a difficult financial period. He was especially important in 2010, scoring eight goals as Derry won promotion from the First Division, and his form in 2011 earned him a move to Sunderland. Derry say his first spell brought 88 appearances and 18 goals, and in January 2026 he returned to the Brandywell on a multi-year deal. In simple terms, McClean is both a homegrown talent and a major club symbol.
