Matt Doherty Jnr was one of the standout figures in Derry City’s pre-League of Ireland history. A Derry-born inside-right, he came through the club’s youth ranks, made his senior debut in 1958, then earned a big move to Glentoran in 1960 for a record inter-Irish League fee of £2,000. He returned to the Brandywell in 1963 and helped Derry win the Irish Cup in 1963–64, scoring in the final against his former club, before also playing his part in the club’s first Irish League title in 1964–65. He was later inducted into Derry City’s Hall of Fame.
