Derry City’s 1997 story is really the 1996–97 season, and it was a title-winning one. Under Felix Healy, they won the League of Ireland Premier Division, finishing first with 67 points from 33 games, ahead of Bohemians. It was the club’s second league title and their first since the famous treble season of 1988–89. Derry scored 58 goals and conceded 27, which shows how balanced the side was across the campaign. They did not complete a double, though: their FAI Cup run ended in defeat to Shelbourne. In simple terms, 1997 was the year Derry climbed back to the top of Irish football.
