Derry City’s 1988–89 season was the greatest in the club’s history. Under Jim McLaughlin, they won a famous domestic treble: the League of Ireland title, the League Cup and the FAI Cup, becoming the first League of Ireland side to complete that clean sweep. The cup success was sealed with a 1–0 win over Cork City in the FAI Cup final, thanks to Felix Healy’s goal. What made it even more impressive was that Derry had only joined the League of Ireland in 1985 and had reverted to semi-professional status that season. In simple terms, 1989 was Derry’s historic breakthrough year.
