Igor Štimac was one of Derby County’s great cult heroes of the 1990s and a major figure in their return to the Premier League. Signed from Hajduk Split in October 1995 for about £1.5 million, he arrived as a classy, combative centre-back and quickly became a fan favourite. He scored on his debut, and Derby then went on the long unbeaten run that helped secure promotion in 1995–96. Across four seasons he made 84 league appearances for the Rams before leaving in 1999. More than the numbers, Štimac brought personality, leadership, and presence, which is why Derby supporters still remember him so fondly.
