Jim Smith was one of Derby County’s most important modern managers, leading the club from 1995 to 2001. In his first full season, 1995–96, he took Derby to runners-up in Division One and won promotion to the Premier League. He then established them in the top flight, with top-half finishes in each of their first three Premier League seasons under him. Smith also oversaw the move from the Baseball Ground to Pride Park in 1997, giving his reign extra significance in the club’s modern history. Known as “The Bald Eagle,” he gave Derby stability, ambition, and a clear identity during a major rebuilding era.
