Roy McFarland was one of Derby County’s greatest ever defenders and a central figure in the club’s golden 1970s era. Signed from Tranmere Rovers in 1967, he became the rock at the heart of the side that won promotion in 1968–69 and then claimed First Division titles in 1971–72 and 1974–75. He made more than 500 appearances for Derby and also won 28 England caps while at the club. Strong, calm, and an outstanding organiser, McFarland gave Derby authority at the back and eventually captained the side. He later returned as manager, adding another chapter to his importance in the club’s history.
