Dave Mackay was a major Derby County figure both as a player and as manager. Signed by Brian Clough in 1968, he captained Derby to promotion from the Second Division in 1968–69 and was so influential he was named joint Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year that season. He later returned as manager in October 1973 and led Derby to the First Division title in 1974–75, proving the club could win the league without Clough. That dual role makes him unusual in Derby history: not just part of one great era, but central to two. He remains one of the club’s defining 20th-century figures.
