Brian Clough transformed Derby County after becoming manager in 1967, working alongside assistant Peter Taylor to take the Rams from the Second Division to the summit of English football; Derby won promotion as Second Division champions in 1968–69, and just three years later Clough guided them to their first-ever First Division title in 1971–72, built around players such as Dave Mackay, Roy McFarland, Colin Todd, Archie Gemmill and John O’Hare; Derby then reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1972–73, losing controversially to Juventus, before Clough and Taylor dramatically resigned in October 1973 following increasing tensions with the club’s board, ending an extraordinary era at the Baseball Ground.
