Brian Clough’s Derby County spell, from 1967 to 1973, was one of the most transformative periods in the club’s history. He and Peter Taylor took Derby from the Second Division to promotion in 1968–69, then won the First Division title in 1971–72, the club’s first league championship. Derby also reached the 1972–73 European Cup semi-finals under him, showing they had become a serious force beyond England. Clough changed the club’s expectations as much as its results, building a confident, hard, intelligent side around players like McFarland, Hector, and Mackay. His reign ended acrimoniously, but it remains a defining golden era for Derby.
