Joel Ward was one of Crystal Palace’s most important modern defenders. He joined from Portsmouth in 2012 and spent 13 years at Selhurst Park, becoming a model of consistency, versatility and professionalism. He helped Palace win promotion through the 2013 Championship play-offs and then played a major role throughout the club’s longest Premier League spell. Palace say he was a near-ever-present in that era, and in April 2024 he became the first player to make 300 Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace. He left in summer 2025 after more than 360 appearances in all competitions, widely respected as a loyal servant and leader.
