Jean-Philippe Mateta became the hero of Crystal Palace F.C.’s historic 2026 UEFA Conference League triumph by scoring the winning goal in a 1–0 victory over Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig. Early in the second half, Adam Wharton drove forward and fired a shot from outside the box. Goalkeeper Augusto Batalla could only parry it, and Mateta reacted instantly, pouncing on the rebound from close range to score in the 51st minute. The goal secured Crystal Palace’s first-ever European trophy and capped a remarkable era under Oliver Glasner. Mateta’s finish quickly became one of the most iconic moments in Palace history, with supporters celebrating wildly both in Leipzig and back at Selhurst Park. For many Palace fans, Mateta’s winner now sits alongside the greatest goals the club has ever scored because it delivered the club’s first major European honour.
