Gordon Strachan mattered to Coventry City as both player and manager. He joined in 1995, made 26 Premier League appearances, and famously played at age 40, which was then a Premier League record for an outfield player. He became manager in November 1996 and immediately helped keep Coventry up in 1996–97, surviving by a single point. His best full season came in 1997–98, when Coventry finished 11th in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals. Strachan brought authority, experience, and organisation, making him a major figure in Coventry’s late-1990s top-flight survival story.
