Gianfranco Zola arrived from Parma in November 1996 and instantly became Chelsea’s “magician”: a small, two-footed forward with outrageous close control and deadly set pieces. Over seven seasons he played 312 games and scored 80 goals, many of them spectacular. He inspired the 1996–97 FA Cup win and was voted Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year that season. Zola delivered in finals too, coming off the bench to score the winner in the 1998 Cup Winners’ Cup, then adding the 1998 League Cup and UEFA Super Cup, plus the 2000 FA Cup— and a fan favourite after he left.
