Roberto Di Matteo took charge of Chelsea on 4 March 2012 as interim coach after André Villas-Boas’ dismissal. He immediately simplified roles, leaned on senior leaders, and tightened the team defensively. The run became legendary: Chelsea won the FA Cup on 5 May (2–1 vs Liverpool) and, two weeks later, claimed their first Champions League title in Munich. In June 2012 the club made him permanent manager on a two-year deal, but early-season form dipped and a 3–0 defeat at Juventus left Chelsea on the brink of group-stage elimination. He was sacked on 21 November 2012 that night by Chelsea.
