Gus Poyet was Chelsea’s first South American star of the modern era, joining on a free in 1997 and playing until 2001. A goalscoring midfielder, he hit 49 goals in 145 appearances, famed for late box runs and thunderous volleys. Poyet scored the winner against Real Madrid to claim the 1998 UEFA Super Cup, featured in the 1998 Cup Winners’ Cup triumph, and powered Chelsea’s 1999–2000 campaign—netting twice in the FA Cup semi-final and helping win the FA Cup at Wembley. Ranieri’s rebuild made him surplus, and he moved to Tottenham. Fans still remember his bite, brains, and big goals.
