César Azpilicueta became one of Chelsea’s greatest modern servants after joining from Marseille in 2012, developing into an exceptionally reliable and versatile defender capable of playing at right-back, left-back or in a back three; nicknamed “Dave” by supporters, the Spaniard made 508 appearances for Chelsea and eventually became club captain, combining consistency and professionalism with success across virtually every major competition; Azpilicueta won two Premier League titles, the 2012–13 Europa League, 2015 League Cup, 2018 FA Cup and a second Europa League in 2019, before captaining Chelsea to their greatest achievement of his era—the 2021 Champions League, defeating Manchester City 1–0 in Porto; he subsequently lifted the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first Chelsea player to win every major club trophy available to him, before leaving for Atlético Madrid in 2023 after eleven distinguished years at Stamford Bridge.
