Shaun Newton was a dependable and versatile member of the successful Charlton Athletic side managed by Alan Curbishley during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Primarily a left-sided midfielder or wing-back, Newton came through Charlton’s youth system and became known for his energy, crossing ability and tactical discipline.
He played an important role in Charlton’s rise to and consolidation in the Premier League, featuring regularly in the side that won promotion in 1998 and again after the club’s immediate return in 2000. Although rarely a headline player, Newton was valued for his consistency and work ethic, qualities that defined many of Curbishley’s teams. He later had spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers and other clubs, but remains fondly remembered by Charlton supporters.
