Alan Curbishley is regarded as one of the greatest figures in the history of Charlton Athletic. Taking over as joint-manager in 1991 before becoming sole boss in 1995, he transformed Charlton from a struggling lower-division side into an established Premier League club. His team won promotion through the unforgettable 1998 First Division play-off final against Sunderland, a dramatic 4–4 draw settled on penalties. After relegation in 1999, Curbishley immediately guided Charlton back up as champions and then stabilised them in the Premier League, including a seventh-place finish in 2003–04. He managed the club for 15 years and over 700 matches, earning legendary status among supporters.
