The 2019 League One play-off final was one of the most dramatic matches in modern Charlton Athletic history. Played at Wembley Stadium against Sunderland A.F.C., Charlton won 2–1 to secure promotion to the Championship under Lee Bowyer. Charlton took the lead after just five minutes through Ben Purrington, but Sunderland equalised late on with a stunning strike from Max Power. As extra time looked certain, defender Patrick Bauer scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time after a defensive mistake, sparking huge celebrations among Charlton supporters. The victory was especially emotional because it came during years of fan protests against owner Roland Duchâtelet. For many supporters, the win represented both footballing success and a moment of unity and relief after a difficult period for the club.
