The 1998 First Division play-off final is widely regarded as one of the greatest matches in English football history and a defining moment for Charlton Athletic. Facing Sunderland A.F.C. at Wembley Stadium, Charlton won promotion to the Premier League after an extraordinary 4–4 draw and penalty shootout victory. Managed by Alan Curbishley, Charlton came from behind multiple times during the match. Striker Clive Mendonca scored a famous hat-trick, including the goal that made it 4–4 in extra time. The penalty shootout ended 7–6 after Sunderland defender Michael Gray’s miss handed Charlton promotion. The match became legendary because of its drama, quality and emotional intensity, and it remains one of the most celebrated days in Charlton’s history.
