Alan Thompson joined Celtic from Aston Villa in September 2000 and became Martin O’Neill’s trusted left-sided midfielder. A fierce competitor with a cultured left foot, he fed Larsson and Sutton, hit long-range strikes and was deadly from set pieces. His biggest moments included the 2003 UEFA Cup run—scoring at Anfield in the quarter-final—and the winner in the 2005 Scottish Cup final, O’Neill’s last trophy. Across seven seasons he logged 158 league appearances and 37 league goals. He even earned an England cap in 2004 while playing for Celtic. Fans remember his edge, delivery and big-game nerve in green and white.
