Celtic faced Liverpool in the 2002–03 UEFA Cup quarter-final, a memorable all-British clash. The first leg at Celtic Park ended 1–1, with Henrik Larsson opening the scoring before Emile Heskey equalised for Liverpool. In the return leg at Anfield, Celtic delivered a composed and disciplined performance. Alan Thompson struck with a trademark free-kick to give them the lead, and John Hartson sealed the tie with a powerful late goal for a 2–0 win. The 3–1 aggregate victory sent Celtic into the semi-finals, where they continued their run to the final in Seville — a landmark European campaign.
