Jimmy McIlroy is regarded as one of Burnley’s greatest-ever players, making nearly 500 appearances between 1950 and 1963; the elegant Northern Irish inside-forward was the creative heartbeat of Harry Potts’ outstanding side, renowned for his vision, passing, intelligence and ability to score goals, and he played a central role as Burnley won the First Division title in 1959–60, clinching the championship on the final day at Manchester City; McIlroy also helped the Clarets reach the 1962 FA Cup final and compete in the European Cup, while earning 55 caps for Northern Ireland, and his immense contribution was later recognised with a stand at Turf Moor bearing his name.
