Burnley’s 2008–09 season was about momentum, belief, and finally ending a 33-year wait for top-flight football. Under Owen Coyle, they finished 5th in the Championship, then beat Reading 3–0 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals before defeating Sheffield United 1–0 in the final at Wembley on 25 May 2009. Wade Elliott’s goal became one of the most famous in club history because it sent Burnley into the Premier League for the first time. The season also stood out for a brilliant League Cup run, where Burnley beat Arsenal and Chelsea before losing to Tottenham in the semi-finals.
