Gary Johnson was Bristol City manager from 2005 to 2010 and led one of the club’s strongest modern periods. He took over with City struggling in League One, then guided them to promotion to the Championship in 2007. His biggest achievement came in 2007–08, when City reached the Championship play-off final in their first season back at that level. Built around players like Adriano Basso, Louis Carey, Marvin Elliott and Lee Trundle, Johnson’s team was organised, energetic and difficult to beat. City lost the final to Hull, but Johnson remains strongly associated with ambition, momentum and near-Premier League success.
