Alan Dicks managed Bristol City from 1967 to 1980, becoming one of the most important managers in the club’s history; after years of gradually building his side, Dicks guided City to promotion to the First Division in 1975–76, ending a 65-year absence from English football’s top flight, with players such as Tom Ritchie, Gerry Gow and Geoff Merrick central to his team; Bristol City then remarkably survived for four consecutive seasons among England’s elite, recording memorable results against the country’s leading clubs, but relegation in 1980 brought the era to an end, with Dicks leaving Ashton Gate after 13 years and more than 600 matches in charge.
