Alan Dicks is Bristol City’s most iconic modern-era manager. Appointed in 1967, he built a strong, settled side and led City to promotion to the First Division in 1976. His team included key players such as Gerry Gow, Tom Ritchie, Geoff Merrick and Paul Cheesley. Bristol City then spent four seasons in the top flight, with famous results including a win at Arsenal in 1976. After relegation in 1980, the club entered a severe financial decline, but Dicks remains strongly associated with City’s greatest post-war period.
