Peter Ward is one of Brighton’s greatest-ever forwards and a genuine cult hero at the club. Signed from Burton Albion in 1975, he became the focal point of Albion’s rise through the divisions in the late 1970s. He scored 36 goals in 1976–77, breaking the club record for a season, and helped Brighton win promotion to the old First Division in 1978–79. Across his main Brighton spell, he scored 79 goals in 178 league appearances, later returning briefly on loan in 1982. Ward also won one England cap while a Brighton player, underlining how highly he was rated.
