Gus Poyet was a hugely important Brighton manager. Appointed in November 2009, he first kept the club clear of trouble, then led them to the League One title in 2010–11, earning promotion to the Championship. His Brighton side became known for bold, possession-based football, which helped change the club’s image as well as its results. Under Poyet, Albion then finished 10th in the Championship and reached the play-offs in 2012–13. His time ended abruptly in June 2013, but he is still remembered as the manager who gave Brighton style, confidence and momentum during a key stage of the club’s rise.
