Chris Hughton was one of the most important managers in Brighton’s history. Appointed in December 2014, he first stabilised the club, then led them to promotion to the Premier League in 2016–17, finishing second in the Championship. He then kept Brighton up in their first two Premier League seasons, with a 15th-place finish in 2017–18 and 17th in 2018–19. His side also reached the 2018–19 FA Cup semi-finals. Hughton gave Brighton organisation, discipline and belief during a transformative period, and he is widely seen as the manager who established the club in the top flight.
