Brighton’s 2017 promotion was one of the biggest moments in the club’s history. Chris Hughton’s side secured promotion to the Premier League on 17 April 2017 with a 2–1 home win over Wigan Athletic, with goals from Glenn Murray and Solly March. It ended Brighton’s 34-year absence from the top flight and made them the 48th club to play in the Premier League. Albion went up automatically from the Championship and finished the 2016–17 season in second place. The promotion was a landmark step in the club’s rise under Tony Bloom and laid the foundation for Brighton’s modern top-flight era.
