Jermain Defoe had two Bournemouth spells and is mostly remembered as both a brilliant early loanee and a big-name later return. On loan from West Ham in 2000–01, he scored 18 league goals in 29 games, a huge total that helped build his reputation. He returned permanently in 2017, but that second spell was much less influential. He did score the winner against Brighton in September 2017, giving Bournemouth their first win of that Premier League season, but injuries and limited minutes reduced his impact before he went on loan to Rangers in January 2019. For Bournemouth, Defoe is remembered more for quality and name value than long-term influence.
