Matthias Sammer was one of Borussia Dortmund’s most important 1990s players. Signed from Inter after starring for Stuttgart, he brought leadership, aggression, elegance on the ball, and tactical intelligence, usually playing as a libero or sweeping defender. Dortmund’s own history places him among the stars who helped Ottmar Hitzfeld build the club’s greatest decade, winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles and the 1997 Champions League. In 1996, Sammer also won the Ballon d’Or, still a rare honour for a Dortmund player. More than a defender, he was the team’s driving force: authoritative, technically gifted, and central to BVB becoming a European power.
