Mats Hummels was one of Borussia Dortmund’s defining modern defenders. Across two spells from 2008–2016 and 2019–2024, he gave BVB composure, leadership, positioning, and elite passing from centre-back. Dortmund say he made 508 appearances, won the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012, plus the DFB-Pokal in 2012 and 2021. He was also central to two runs to the Champions League final, in 2013 and 2024. More than the trophies, Hummels gave Dortmund authority at the back and became one of the symbolic faces of the Klopp era and beyond.
