İlkay Gündoğan was a classy, intelligent Borussia Dortmund midfielder in Jürgen Klopp’s great side. He joined in 2011, initially to help replace Nuri Şahin, and became known for composure, technique, and control in midfield. Bundesliga’s recap of Dortmund’s 2011/12 double-winning team notes that after a difficult first half of the season, he improved sharply after the winter break and became a key player in the title run-in. He helped BVB win the 2011–12 Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double, then played a major role in the run to the 2013 Champions League final. He is remembered as one of Dortmund’s most refined modern midfielders.
