Mario Götze was one of Borussia Dortmund’s brightest modern talents. A product of BVB’s academy, he broke through under Jürgen Klopp as a clever, technical attacker who could play as a No. 10, winger, or false nine. He was central to Dortmund’s rise, helping them win the Bundesliga in 2010–11 and the league-and-cup double in 2011–12. Bundesliga’s retrospective calls those years his “Wunder Years,” which fits his early reputation. He later returned to Dortmund in 2016 after an unpopular move to Bayern, adding a second DFB-Pokal in 2016–17. At his best, Götze gave Dortmund imagination, close control, and incision between the lines.
