Manfred Burgsmüller was one of Borussia Dortmund’s great post-war goalscorers. Dortmund’s own tribute says he played for BVB for almost seven years after their promotion in 1976, scored 135 Bundesliga goals for the club, and remains Dortmund’s record Bundesliga scorer. The club also notes that he served as captain from 1979 to 1983 and earned his three Germany caps while a Dortmund player. Burgsmüller was a classic striker: sharp in the box, strong in the air, and consistently productive. He is remembered less for trophies than for goals, leadership, and carrying Dortmund in a difficult era before the club’s later major successes.
