John McGinlay became a Bolton Wanderers cult hero after joining from Millwall in 1992, with the Scottish striker’s goals playing a major part in the club’s rise during the 1990s; nicknamed “Super John,” he helped Bolton win promotion from the third tier in 1992–93 and scored crucial goals during their memorable 1994–95 promotion campaign, including the play-off final victory over Reading that took Wanderers into the Premier League; McGinlay was a committed, energetic forward with a strong goalscoring instinct and finished his Bolton career with over 100 goals in all competitions, leaving in 1997 as one of the most popular players of that era.
