Nat Lofthouse is one of Bolton Wanderers’ greatest-ever players, spending his entire senior career with his hometown club from 1946 to 1960 and scoring 255 goals in 452 league appearances; nicknamed the “Lion of Vienna” for his fearless performance for England against Austria in 1952, the powerful centre-forward combined bravery, strength and outstanding finishing, and his defining club achievement came in the 1958 FA Cup final, when he scored both goals as Bolton defeated Manchester United 2–0 at Wembley; Lofthouse also scored 30 goals in 33 England appearances, later serving Bolton in several roles, and remains an enduring symbol of the club.
