Kevin Davies joined Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer from Southampton in 2003 and became one of the defining players of the Sam Allardyce era; initially considered a gamble, the powerful striker developed into a hugely effective Premier League forward through his physical strength, aerial ability, relentless work rate and hold-up play, helping Bolton achieve four consecutive top-eight finishes, reach the 2004 League Cup final and compete in Europe; Davies later became club captain, remained loyal following relegation in 2012 and finished his decade at Bolton with more than 400 appearances and 80 goals, while his performances also earned him a first and only England cap in 2010, aged 33.
