Graeme Souness managed Blackburn Rovers from 2000 to 2004, taking over with the club in the second tier and quickly restoring them to the Premier League with promotion in 2000–01; his biggest achievement came in 2002, when Blackburn beat Tottenham 2–1 at the Millennium Stadium to win the League Cup, with Andy Cole scoring the winner; Souness built a competitive side featuring Brad Friedel, Damien Duff, David Dunn, Tugay and Cole, later guiding Rovers to sixth place in 2002–03 and UEFA Cup qualification, before leaving Ewood Park in September 2004 to become Newcastle United manager.
