Gil Merrick was a true Birmingham City icon – a Sparkhill-born goalkeeper who spent his entire senior career with Blues, playing from 1939 to 1960 and making 700+ appearances in all competitions. He was also England’s No.1 in the early 1950s, winning 23 caps and featuring at the 1954 World Cup. After retiring, Merrick became Birmingham manager (1960–64) and delivered one of the club’s greatest achievements: winning the 1963 League Cup, beating local rivals Aston Villa in the final.
