Christophe Dugarry joined Birmingham City on loan from Bordeaux in January 2003, bringing genuine international pedigree as a 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winner with France; after a slow start, the elegant forward became a cult hero with a brilliant run of form, scoring five goals in four matches during Birmingham’s first Premier League season, including memorable goals against Southampton, Middlesbrough and Charlton, helping Steve Bruce’s side comfortably avoid relegation; his loan move became permanent that summer, but injuries and inconsistency limited his impact during 2003–04, and he left for Qatar in 2004, although his brief spell remains fondly remembered by Blues supporters.
