Darren Carter came through Birmingham City’s academy and became a cult hero while still a teenager, making his first-team debut in 2002. His defining moment came in the 2002 First Division play-off final against Norwich City at the Millennium Stadium: aged just 18, Carter stepped up to score Birmingham’s decisive penalty in the shootout, securing promotion to the Premier League. A technically gifted central midfielder with a strong left foot, he made over 50 appearances for Blues but struggled to establish himself consistently after promotion, competing with more experienced midfielders. He left Birmingham permanently for West Bromwich Albion in 2005.
