Stephen Carr’s Birmingham City career (2009–2013) made him a proper modern Blues leader. The Irish right-back came out of retirement to join in February 2009, quickly earned a longer deal, and became a mainstay as Birmingham went up to the Premier League and stayed there. He later wore the captain’s armband, and he was part of the side that won the 2011 League Cup at Wembley (Birmingham’s famous 2–1 win over Arsenal). He stayed on after relegation, even signing a new one-year contract in July 2012, before retiring in May 2013.
