Thomas Helmer was a key Bayern Munich defender in the 1990s. Joining from Borussia Dortmund in 1992, he became an important part of Bayern’s back line thanks to his composure, positional sense, leadership, and ability to play as a centre-back or sweeper. He was part of a successful era, winning three Bundesliga titles and the 1995–96 UEFA Cup with the club. Helmer also served as captain and brought experience and authority to the team during a period of transition. He may not be mentioned as often as some Bayern legends, but he was a highly reliable and decorated defender for the club.
